New Years resolutions shouldn’t exclude your eye health. Check out these six resolutions to maintain better vision in 2020!

1. Eat Right

Eating a healthy diet for your eyes helps prevent diseases, such as dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. A diet that includes cold-water fish (its rich in omega-3 fatty acids), leafy greens, whole grains, and citrus fruits will provide the body with vitamins that are vitally important to eye health. Consider trying new meals with colorful fruits and veggies, eggs, beef, beans and legumes.

2. Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes need protection from harmful UV rays YEAR AROUND. Sun damage can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness. Always wear sunglasses with 100 percent UVA and UVB rays (UV protection). You’ll find the latest designer sunglasses at Mira Mesa Eyecare.

3.  Keep Contacts Clean

Proper care of contact lenses prevents infection. Always wash your hands before touching your lenses, use only doctor approved contact lens solutions, follow disposal instructions, change the lens case at least every three months and remove lenses before swimming or sleeping (unless otherwise instructed).

4. Schedule Regular Eye Exams

5. Quit Smoking

There are many reasons to list here as to why you should not smoke. Some research links smoking to an increased risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. So quit or never start smoking for stronger eyes. This is also best for overall health!

6. Get Rest

If you spend a significant time in front of a television or computer screen, your eyes are no doubt fatigued. Never ignore the fatigue. Frequent breaks will help reduce eye strain. Consider the 20-20-20 Rule: every 20 minutes look 20 feet ahead of you for 20 seconds.
