NOVEMBER: Diabetic Eye Disease Month

Diabetes can lead to a wide variety health complications, including heart disease, nerve damage, stroke, kidney disease, and vision loss. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans.

Today many treatments are available and they are significantly more effective when the disease is detected early. The most common and debilitating vision problem experienced by diabetics is diabetic retinopathy.

Tips to reduce your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy:

1. Schedule a comprehensive eye examination with our eye care professional yearly.
2. Get plenty of exercise
3. Eat a healthy well-balanced diet
4. Patients with diabetes must control their blood sugar levels and take medications as directed.
5. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol usage
